The Air India flight, carrying a total of 242 people, including 232 passengers and 10 crew members, crashed at approximately 1:38 PM local time. The footage captured by bystanders shows the aircraft struggling to gain altitude shortly after liftoff. The jet was seen flying unusually low before it plummeted to the ground and erupted into a massive fireball upon impact.

Flight AI 171, which was scheduled to operate between Ahmedabad and London Gatwick, encountered trouble soon after departure. In a brief statement, Air India confirmed an incident involving the aircraft and stated that efforts are underway to verify the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Scenes from the crash site are harrowing—thick, grey smoke billowing into the sky and emergency teams rushing to rescue survivors. Over 20 ambulances were dispatched, transporting several injured individuals to nearby hospitals. Law enforcement has sealed off the area and diverted traffic to facilitate emergency operations.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced he is closely monitoring developments and has instructed all relevant authorities to respond with urgency and full coordination. “My prayers are with the passengers, crew, and their families during this extremely difficult time,” he said in a post on social media platform X.

According to a statement from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aircraft was commanded by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a veteran with over 8,200 flying hours, and assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 hours. The pilots issued a Mayday call just before the crash, indicating a serious emergency.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, while rescue efforts are still underway. Further details are expected as the situation unfolds.
