UAE's Etihad-SAT Satellite Scheduled for Launch in March 2025

Dubai, UAE – February 27, 2025 – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is poised to enhance its space exploration capabilities with the upcoming launch of the Etihad-SAT, an advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite. Developed through a strategic partnership between the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) and South Korea’s Satrec Initiative, the satellite is scheduled for deployment in the first week of March 2025.

Strategic Development and International Collaboration

The Etihad-SAT project commenced two years ago as part of a knowledge transfer program between MBRSC and Satrec Initiative. This collaboration involved defining the satellite’s specifications, preliminary design phases, and rigorous technical testing to ensure adherence to the highest industry standards. The partnership underscores the UAE’s commitment to fostering international cooperation in advancing its space technology and expertise.

Launch Details

The satellite is slated for launch aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, USA. This mission marks a significant milestone in MBRSC’s Satellite Development Programme, as Etihad-SAT is the center’s first satellite equipped with SAR imaging technology. The inclusion of SAR capabilities will enhance the UAE’s Earth observation proficiency, providing high-resolution images regardless of weather conditions.

Leadership Perspectives

His Excellency Hamad Obaid AlMansoori, Chairman of MBRSC, emphasized that the launch of Etihad-SAT reflects the UAE’s dedication to bolstering its space sector by integrating cutting-edge advancements in satellite development. He stated, “Adding a SAR satellite to our fleet expands our ability to provide solutions that support our journey toward a knowledge and innovation-based economy.”

His Excellency Salem Humaid AlMarri, Director General of MBRSC, highlighted the significance of the collaboration with Satrec Initiative, noting that it has been instrumental in acquiring expertise in SAR satellite development. He remarked, “With its advanced capabilities, the satellite will support many vital sectors in the UAE.”

Advancing the UAE’s Space Ambitions

The Etihad-SAT mission aligns with the UAE’s broader objectives to advance its space exploration endeavors and technological innovation. The successful deployment of this satellite is expected to contribute significantly to environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster management, thereby supporting sustainable development and reinforcing the UAE’s position in the global space industry.

As the launch date approaches, the UAE’s space community and international partners eagerly anticipate the operationalization of Etihad-SAT, marking a new chapter in the nation’s journey toward space exploration and technological excellence.
